One of my contacts recently posted on Linked In words a bit like this (edited and name withheld to avoid embarrassment) “time is precious but without giving time to learning new techniques for gaining business you might find yourself with more time than you expect in the future because your business has gone bust” (Embarrassment because he has yet, after 10 years, to get his fellow directors to agree to some sales training) But he is still absolutely right! You owe it to yourself, your business, your family, to invest the time to learn how to get more revenue at higher margins with less effort. That probably means learning new skills as well as just techniques.

I did a quick poll on LinkedIn asking how people prefer to learn new skills; “face to face with a trainer” was the option that had twice the votes of the next favoured option “bite-size online videos”. Apps scored zero! That last one really surprised me. I thought Apps were the Next Big Thing. I use an App for learning Catalan. But it seems the “big revolution” in training has happened yet.

Don’t under-estimate new technology, though. AI is making rapid change to the selling landscape. I’ve come across Fathom AI that records Zoom meetings, takes the notes and plonks them right into your CRM. Amazing! So the 21st Century is happening; if you don’t get on board, you’ll miss out for sure.

However, it would seem that just putting in the time with your sales coach is still the most effective way of learning your sales skills.
